"The BBC has strict editorial guidelines for this type of investigation which were followed to the letter" - so have they done this sort of thing before? I spend my working life stopping attacks from people like this - they could have used a test network not connected to the internet, as other IT Techs and anti virus reseachers do. If I were an ISP they have used or a computer they had infected I would sue. Did they cause any loss of business or other problems by people not being able to access their email? The BBC should be forced to to pay for any cleaning up of the problem they have caused. Of course that would be paid for by the licence fee payers, so that won't bother the BBC much.

Like breaking into a house to prove security is lax, it is illegal.

To set the record straight, since this story came out, we found out that the tape stolen from C-W Agencies' premises on Nov. 4 has been recovered and it is being examined by forensic experts who will determine whether the information has been accessed. Because of encryption, the requirements for specialized equipment, knowledge and facilities, C-W Agencies hope that the data has not been compromised. C-W Agencies informed their customers of the theft immediately. The criminal and civil matters that have arisen from this situation are before the courts and C-W Agencies are determined to protect their data and are taking all reasonable measures to ensure the security of their customers.

I'm working in a big company where may happen that laptops could be stolen or lost. Obviously in some cases these may be stored important information about the company itself, its business and even sensitive datas about Customers or employees. A good solution could be an encryption system linked to a biometric sensor for the data stored on the hard disk. For the possibility to connect to the corporate network through VPN is concerned, I think it wouldn't be somewhat an hard work to have access in an Active Directory authentication-based environment. Anyway I bet there be a cracking solution even in this case but the goal would be completed only before the disabling of the user-account.
In the end I believe the best solution is having no data at all stored locally but just managing virtual-machines (disk-less PC) with all the important information saved on centralized servers.
